Common Side Effects is an upcoming animated series for Adult Swim. It was created by animator Joe Bennett and writer, producer and comedian Steve Hely and is slated to release in 2025.
Production Information[]
The series was first announced at Annecy festival 2023.[1]
Bennett is most known for creating the universally acclaimed sci-fi animated series Scavengers Reign, while Hely is most known for writing and producing shows such as Veep and The Office. The show is set to be produced by Bennett and Hely, James Merrill for Bennett's animation studio Green Street Pictures[2] and Greg Daniels, Dustin Davis and Mike Judge for their production company Bandera Entertainment. Also producing for Green Street are Max Minor and Susan Shi, both are best known for their work at 6 Point Harness. Benjy Brooke, like with Scavengers Reign, will serve as supervising director.[3]
The cast is slated to include Judge, Martha Kelly and Joseph Lee Anderson[4]. Emily Pendergast and Dave King, who will also serve as a writer for the show, will be playing the two protagonists, Frances and Marshall, respectively. Joining King on the writing staff is Sean Buckelew, who worked with Bennett on Scavengers Reign and will also serve as the show's director.[5]
The 22 minute first episode was shown at San Diego Comic Con 2024 & FanExpo Canada 2024 and a 6-minute-preview was uploaded to Adult Swim's YouTube.
Synopsis[]
The show is set to follow a serialized plot of Marshall and Frances, two former high school friends, discovering a new kind of drug that can allegedly cure all illnesses. In the process, they also uncover a conspiracy involving big pharma and the government to suppress all knowledge of said drug. Bennett has also stated that the show will focus on character development based arcs.[6]
