The Rising Son is a live action stealth television series on Cartoon Network's late night programing block, Adult Swim, that premiered on April 19, 2009. It is a sitcom about Jesus, Joseph and Mary.
Overview[]
The Rising Son is a soap opera parody of the purported life and works of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The show portrays Jesus as naive and emphasizes other character flaws not normally associated with Biblical characters. Human failings in characters normally regarded as saints are common and Pontius Pilate, the man who crucified Christ, is shown as an acquaintance and business associate of the main characters. Although Jesus, unlike his family, is not shown as consciously sinning, he is shown doing things which are out-of-character, such as accepting Mary Magdalene as his personal savior and doubting the existence or relevance of God.
Cast[]
- Andrew Benator as Joseph
- Debra McDavid as Mary and Mother of Jesus
- Bill Tush as Pontius Pilate
- Amber Chaney as Mary
- Dan Megini also stars on the show, but different sources list him as playing either Jesus or Judd
History[]
Very little is known about the series or its production history. The shows credits list Dave Drabik and Benjamin Barak as creators and Easily Avoidable Entertainment as the show's production company (unlike most of Adult Swim's live-action shows, it was not produced by Williams Street).
The series received almost no promotion, other than brief mentions in the Bumps and a listing on the schedule, it did not appear on Adult Swim's online streaming video service and does not appear anywhere else on the Adult Swim website. When it aired, it was buried at 5:00 A.M. Sunday mornings, after a block of anime programming.
Season one premiered on April 19, 2009 and ended after four episodes on May 10, 2009. The show's status is in question, as it has been more than a year since the first season ended. Adult Swim has never spoken of the series in updates and it is believed to be cancelled. All 4 episodes did eventually come to Adult Swim's online streaming service, and are now available to watch at anytime (not having expiration dates unlike most Adult Swim shows).
