United Paramount Network (UPN) was a television network that was born in the United States. It first aired on January 16, 1995 and was founded by Paramount Pictures and Chris-Craft Industries. It was owned by CBS Corporation. Its most loyal audience was of African American descent and young women.
The first program the network aired was the 2-hour pilot episode of the series Star Trek: Voyager. The series that premiered the following night were canceled in their first season. In 2000, Viacom (Owner of Paramount) bought Chris-Craft's shares, leaving it with 100% of the chain. Even Viacom thought about renaming it Paramount Network
The network merged with The WB to create the joint venture network The CW on September 16, 2006. UPN aired the first half of the first season of Home Movies before it was cancelled due to low ratings.
